Learning Diagnostics Through Play

Discover the serious game ‘The Analyst’!

2026/09/09

How can diagnostic knowledge be taught interactively rather than just from a textbook? The next E-Learning Roundtable on 24 September 2026 will focus on the serious game ‘The Analyst’ – a project in which students were actively involved in the game’s development.

Books alone rarely motivate students to engage in active learning – particularly in diagnostic training. This is precisely where the serious game “The Analyst” comes in; it will be presented online via Zoom at the next E-Learning Roundtable on 24 September 2026, from 3 pm to 4 pm.

The game was developed as part of the “Serious Games as Learning Diagnostics” project at TU Darmstadt, funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre (opens in new tab). It is aimed at degree programmes in which diagnostics plays a central role: for example, education, psychology, medicine and sports science.

Rather than conveying knowledge purely in theory, “The Analyst” allows students to explore a range of diagnostic scenarios themselves and receive detailed feedback along the way. The game was developed according to the concept of player-centred design – students and lecturers were involved in the development process from the outset, for instance in creating the knowledge base, videos, quiz applications and game episodes.

Prof. Dr. Josef Wiemeyer from the Department of Human Sciences will present the game and the project behind it at the E-Learning Roundtable: how was the implementation approached in practice, and what do the evaluation results so far show? Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for discussion – for example, on possible applications in participants' own teaching.

The event will take place online via Zoom on Thursday 24 September 2026 from 3 pm to 4 pm.

You can register via the TU Darmstadt Skills Portal (opens in new tab). You will then receive the login details for the Zoom meeting.
