HessenHub – Network for Digital University Teaching

A project funded by the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK) in which twelve Hessian universities are working together to develop innovative concepts for digitally supported teaching as well as digital learning content.

digLL becomes HessenHub

In line with the second project phase (2021-2024), the former digLL project (digitally based teaching and learning) has given a new name. The aim of the second funding phase is to further develop the projects and structures established in phase I in order to expand existing competencies, develop innovative teaching projects, and offer students contemporary teaching and learning formats.

The Hessian universities will:

  1. support teachers in the field of media didactics and media technology in the conception and design of digitally based teaching and learning formats in order to encourage the professional use of digital media in teaching.
  2. provide students with teaching and learning materials that are as barrier-free as possible, regardless of location and time, and thus ensure fairer participation in education.
  3. promote cross-university networking of lecturers through joint qualification and networking offers in order to enable a state-wide idea sharing.
  4. create a space for the joint testing of new technologies and formats in teaching in order to position the Hessian universities for the future.

Hessenhub at the TU Darmstadt

is coordinating the project at the TU Darmstadt. The TU Darmstadt is involved in the project with the following main topics:

Building on the requirements analyses (legal, didactic, technical) carried out in phase 1 and the first practical tests, remote online examinations on BYOD (“Bring your own device”) as well as on-site e-examinations with different examination systems and formats will be piloted together with departments and chairs in phase 2 in order to introduce an electronic examination system at the TU Darmstadt at the end of the second project phase. The aim is to use the possibilities of an electronic examination system to enable new didactic scenarios for a stronger competence orientation in written examinations on the one hand and to relieve the burden of examinations with large numbers of participants on the other.

Information website about E-Exams

The interactive online assignment database, which is currently being set up for use in exercises in all engineering mathematics courses in the introductory phase, is being expanded. The innovative core of the new system is that student solutions entered online are automatically analysed and error-adaptive feedback is given. In addition to the direct learning effect, this deficit-oriented individual diagnosis initiates and strengthens the ability to study on one's own as an alternative or supplement to classical face-to-face exercises.

The aim is to create and provide “open and quality-assured materials” in digital form to enrich introductory physics courses. In cooperation with the e-learning group of the TU Darmstadt, which supports the project from a media-didactic point of view, STACK-based task sets are developed and evaluated as elementary learning offers. These enable the users to generate an individual strengths/weaknesses profile and to use targeted support offers for self-directed learning. On the one hand, the implementation is carried out in online preparatory and accompanying courses for lectures at the TU Darmstadt. On the other hand, the underlying task database is to be made available online as a resource in order to develop it further in a cooperative process with other interested universities.

Building on the working structures established in Phase 1 together with JLU Giessen and the materials produced for digital teaching, the creation of didactic design patterns and best practices will be continued and intensified, also depending on the situation with a stronger focus on purely digital teaching settings. At the same time, new formats of Hesse-wide exchange on didactic issues (together with the central service point) are being established on a sustainable basis. The aim is to broaden the discussion of didactic issues in digital teaching and to create concrete motivation systems and practical trials for this purpose.
