TU-Extern: A 360° virtual reality tour by GSI and FAIR

A 360° campus tour was created to give the widest possible audience low-threshold access to research at GSI and FAIR in Darmstadt. By going through the tour with a VR headset, interested parties gain a highly immersive and spatial impression of the GSI campus.

This project was implemented as part of Future Learning Spaces in 2025 .

The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt operates one of the world's leading particle accelerator facilities for research. Currently, FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), an international accelerator center for research with antiprotons and ions, is being developed and built at GSI in collaboration with international partners.

To provide a broad audience with low-threshold access to research at GSI and FAIR, a 360° campus tour was created with the support of the E-Learning Group of the Center for Educational Development and Technology and the fuels project. This tour offers the opportunity to explore the particle accelerator and key experimental sites on the GSI campus. Additionally, footage from the FAIR construction site grants digital access to otherwise inaccessible, complex building structures. The tour is further enriched with multimedia content, introducing viewers to the research topics at GSI and FAIR while providing insights into the future facility.

The tour is designed for use with virtual reality headsets. On the one hand, interested individuals can gain a highly immersive spatial impression of the campus, and on the other hand, they can independently explore various aspects of the research center. By enabling a digital visit, GSI and FAIR become more easily accessible to a broader audience, even beyond the local region. The first deployment is planned for the GSI/FAIR Science Pop-Up at Darmstadt city centre, where all curious visitors will have the opportunity to experience the VR tour in an interactive exhibition.
