Center for Educational Development and Technology/ Key Skills: Room design in tutorials

Tutors at TU Darmstadt can explore a classic tutorial room in a digital 360° university environment, try out different seating arrangements and consider which scenario is suitable when and which opportunities and challenges result from this.

This project is a result of the workshop programme ‘Conception and development of 360° learning spaces’ and was implemented as part of "fuels – Future Learning Spaces“ in 2024 .

Students who take on a tutorial are often faced with the challenge of creating a good learning atmosphere. The room conditions, but also a well thought-out room design based on didactic and methodological criteria, play a role here. But what is important when it comes to room design and what options are there? This 360° project provides answers to exactly these questions from tutors.

Tutors can enter a virtual seminar room at TU Darmstadt and try out various options for seminar room design: Tutors can choose between rows of seats, group tables, a circle of chairs, a horseshoe shape and an empty room. In the 360° environment, they can adopt different perspectives to help them decide whether the chosen arrangement is suitable for their tutorial. They are supported by reflection questions and information about opportunities and challenges as well as methodologically appropriate scenarios. The aim is to sensitise tutors to the fact that a didactically and methodically well considered room design has a positive effect on the learning atmosphere. In addition, they should be enabled to make exactly these decisions in line with their individual teaching planning and therefore increase the quality of their tutorial.

The 360° experience is integrated into the ‘Tutor qualification’ moodle course (opens in new tab), which is accessible to all students and tutors at TU Darmstadt. Here, tutors receive a wide range of self-study materials to help them find their role and prepare, organise and follow up on their tutorials.

The 360° project ‘Room design in tutorials’ was designed, developed and technically implemented in cooperation with the Key Skills unit and the E-Learning Group of the Center for Educational Development and Technology at TU Darmstadt.
