Development of the App “ARtemis” (2023)
Tool for integrating 3D objects into augmented reality environments
The development of the ARtemis app was realised as part of the . ‘fuels – Future Learning Spaces’ project in 2023
In 2024, as the project progressed, the following further developments were carried out for ARtemis: as well as Workflow development and elaboration of the toolkit around ‘ARtemis’ . ‘ARtemis 2.0’ – update and new functions
The tool ARtemis (short for: Augmented Reality Toolkit for Educational Methodology and Interactive Simulation), developed at the TU Darmstadt, offers a way to integrate 3D objects in near real-time into an AR environment in a low-threshold way.
The rapid integration of 3D files in augmented reality opens up the potential to change the way teaching content is presented and communicated by allowing teachers and students to visualize static as well as animated 3D models and interactive AR scenes themselves, import them into the environment and then interact with them using a mobile device.ARtemis is therefore intended to offer people without programming knowledge an easy introduction and initial orientation in the area of designing learning scenarios with augmented reality.
The areas of application and potential of ARtemis are diverse. They can range from science to history, art, engineering, etc. Different topics can be made more accessible and understandable through 3D models, such as the structure of a molecule or the structure of a machine.
However, the AR component not only allows viewing but also interacting with the 3D models. Students can rotate, scale, or interact with them using additional animations. As part of collaborative learning, groups can work together with the virtual 3D model, which is intended to promote teamwork and collaborative problem solving. Instead of using physical models or laboratory equipment, the AR environment can be used to provide students with the same or even expanded access to educational materials without the need for physical space or equipment and maintenance costs.
Easy use of the ARtemis app
ll you need is a mobile device to ARtemis. Thanks to a simplified user interface and workflow, your own and purchased 3D models can be quickly implemented and used in augmented reality without any programming knowledge.
If you are interested in using ARtemis and the didactic development of specific use cases with the AR environment, you can contact us at any time.

Exemplary workflow for ARtemis use
Record: You take a picture of the object, e.g. with a mobile phone camera. Take single images that together give a 360° panoramic view of the object.
Generate: A digital 3D object is created from the individual images.
Augmented: Use the 3D object in an augmented reality setting with the help of ARtemis.
