What is a Panopto webcast, and how does it differ from a Zoom meeting?

A webcast is a live stream from Panopto that is automatically recorded. (FAQ: How do I create a webcast in Panopto? )

Differences from a Zoom meeting:

  • A Zoom meeting is a synchronous video conference, whereas a Panopto webcast is more asynchronous (currently about 45 seconds latency between sending and receiving).
  • The transmission quality of a webcast is significantly higher than that of Zoom. The recording quality (especially audio) is also much better.
  • A webcast is not an interactive live format; viewers can only submit questions via chat. In Zoom, face-to-face interactions are possible.
  • A webcast can easily accommodate over 1,000 viewers, whereas Zoom has participant limitations.
