What should I consider when saving videos in other languages on Panopto?

On the level of Panopto folders (which are assigned to a specific Moodle course ), you can specify the language used in the course.

By setting the language at the folder level, Panopto can correctly recognise the spoken language in the videos stored there and create a transcript based on it. This enables both the searchability of videos by terms and the availability of automatically generated captions in the correct language (see FAQ ''How do I create captions for my videos?'' ).

In practical terms: If your videos are, for example, in English, and you set this in the folder's language settings where the videos are stored, the videos will also be searchable in English, and English captions will be automatically generated (if captions are enabled). If you keep Panopto's default folder language setting (German), the spoken English content may not be correctly recognised or transcribed.

TIP: The automatically generated transcript can also be exported, translated into another language, and re-imported, allowing you to provide captions in multiple languages for a single video (see FAQ ''How can I create captions in another language and what should I consider?'' ).

How is the language setting configured?

You can change the language in the folder settings under ''Settings'' in the section ''Content Language''. Currently, around 20 languages are available.

Changing the language for already existing materials

If the language in the video differs from the folder language, the captions of the video can be reprocessed in the corresponding language. See also the support article (in English): „How to reprocess Automatic Captioning to a Different Language?“ (opens in new tab)
