Course layout options

Moodle offers a variety of design options that not only give your course a fresh look, but can also help to improve clarity. It is therefore worth taking a look at Moodle's different course layout options, especially for very extensive courses.

Course layout options in Moodle

To improve the clarity of especially content rich course rooms, Moodle offers the course layout option Show one section per page and the possibility: Highlight a section. Besides the different course formats (see Course formats ) that you can select in Moodle, these options help to make your Moodle course clearer and more user-friendly.

In the following, we would like to introduce you to the course layout options and show you how you can incorporate them into your course design to meet the requirements of your course.

Note: Course formats and course layout options can be freely combined on Moodle.

In order to display a lot of content in a organised way, Moodle offers you the option of displaying the content of a section on a separate subpage. This function is activated with the course layout option Show one section per page. Selecting this option means that the stored course content only becomes visible after clicking on the respective section or topic. This maintains a simple course structure, which makes it easier to navigate through the individual subject areas, especially for very extensive courses, without any content missing.

To activate this display option for your Moodle course, click on Settings in your course room in the navigation bar above. In the course settings, scroll down to the sub-item Course format and click to select the section (see “Select course layout”). You will then be shown the sub-item Course layout, which allows you to choose between the option Show all sections on one page, which is activated as standard, and the alternative option Show one section per page. Select the last option and save the changes.

In the topic and weekly format, the option Show one section per page means that only the titles and description texts of the individual course sections are displayed on the course page. Stored materials, tasks and activities are only loaded on a separate page after clicking on the respective section. In grid format, a similar setting called Use pop-up can be used, which decides whether the content of a clicked topic square is displayed on a newly loaded page or whether the clicked topic is opened in a pop-up window.

Note: Activating the course layout option Show one section per page is particularly recommended if you have decided to display your course in topic format and want to maintain the greatest possible clarity.

If you select this course layout option in weekly format, please bear in mind that not all weekly sections will be displayed in a compact overview. The current week section is automatically expanded (including the elements within it).

This display option is not available in tab format, tile format and grid format, as in these course formats each topic is displayed on a separate page or in a pop-up anyway. You can also find an overview of all the course formats that can be set on Moodle in our FAQ article Course formats.

Another visual support that you can use in your Moodle course room no matter which course format you have selected is the possibility to Highlight a section. Activating this option causes the selected course section to be displayed separately. For example, in the tile format, the tile of the highlighted section is highlighted in a specific colour. Subject areas that you consider to be important can be visually highlighted and can therefore be found more quickly by course participants.

To activate this display option, first set your course to edit mode by clicking on the Edit slider at the top right of the course room. Then search for the desired course section and click on the three dots to the right of the selected section. A drop-down menu will then open. Click on Highlight (see “Highlight section”). The selected course section now appears highlighted on the course overview page.

Note: The exact appearance of a highlighted section depends on the course format selected. In grid and tile format, for example, highlighted sections are marked in different colours.

So if you decide to switch to a different course format (see Course formats ), try out how the highlighting of a section looks in this course format and see if you are happy with it.
