QuizAcademy [on the web]

An engaging learning tool with quiz questions and digital flashcards for self-study and live activation in teaching sessions

With QuizAcademy, teachers can create interactive quiz questions and digital flashcards for their learners – for self-study, exam preparation, and live activation in the classroom. Learning analytics and personalised learning plans in the app support individual learning guidance. Gamification features enable a motivating and playful design of live quizzes.

The digital learning content created by teachers in QuizAcademy in the form of flashcards and quiz questions can either be worked through independently by learners or the quiz questions can be presented live by the teacher during a class session and used for activation. As with other live voting systems (e.g. Particify, Mentimeter), this opens up a variety of possibilities for the interactive design of teaching sessions .

Beyond live use, QuizAcademy also places a strong focus on self-study through its features. In particular, the app offers learners personalised learning support by analysing their progress, creating an automated study plan up to the exam date upon request, and providing guidance on which content is already well understood and which areas still need further revision.

QuizAcademy is therefore suitable both for use in teaching sessions and for individual self-study. It combines didactically meaningful learning and practice content with gamification elements and personalised learning support.

QuizAcademy is a German company that was founded in 2015 in the environment of the University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute.

Possible Uses

  • Knowledge Transfer and Consolidation
QuizAcademy enables content to be delivered and reinforced in a variety of ways – through digital flashcards, quiz questions, and interactive exam preparation. Learners can either practise at their own pace or take part in real-time as part of a live quiz.
  • Integration into Teaching Sessions
Teachers can use QuizAcademy in a targeted way to revisit, review, or deepen content from lectures or seminars, including through group work. Integration into Moodle is possible via an embed code.
  • Individual Learning Support and Self-Study
Through automatic learning evaluation, learners receive feedback on their progress. Based on this, a personalised learning plan can be created, which dynamically adapts to individual learning behaviour – including a reminder function up to the exam date.
  • Gamified Activation in the Classroom
Thanks to the game mode, teachers can also run regular quiz challenges or knowledge duels to review content in an engaging way or use them as an introduction to new topics.
  • On QuizAcademy, various question types such as single choice, multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended questions can be used. There are no limitations regarding the number of answer options or text length, and images and formulas (via LaTeX) can be embedded, as well as text formatting applied.
  • The live event feature can be used as a gamification or survey tool. Quiz questions can be conducted as a competition with a time limit, points system, and leaderboard. Survey questions, on the other hand, are non-assessed and can be used to gather a general mood or opinion from participants.
  • In addition to quiz questions, flashcards can also be created to enable learning and consolidation of content. They can include various media such as formulas, images, videos, and audio. Explanations and web links are also possible.
  • All content can be organised into courses. A course acts like a container that brings together a topic – similar to a book or script. It consists of flashcard stacks, which function like chapters, and quizzes. Courses can therefore be used very effectively as digital self-learning modules.
  • An exam function can also be used as part of a course, for example for exam preparation.
  • Live events, courses, and exams can be embedded using an embed code in learning platforms such as Moodle or on websites.
  • In the app, learners can create their own learning sessions, in which they flexibly compile content. A learning plan can also be created, which displays exactly the content needed for their individual progress. Smart reminders (app notifications) support self-organised learning in everyday life.

QuizAcademy can be used via a web browser as well as through an app for iOS and Android. Using the app provides additional features (opens in new tab), such as more detailed analytics for learners.

In principle, only teachers who wish to create content in QuizAcademy require an account. Learners do not need their own account to access the content. Registration (opens in new tab) takes place via email.

There are various licence models (opens in new tab), for example:

  • Free: Free of charge (up to 1 course, 1 live event, 1 exam, max. 10 participants)
  • Discounts for schools and universities: €89 per year including all standard features
