Moodle: lesson, wiki [at the TU]

Online learning units as study material within the learning platform

Instead of uploading lecture slides or scripts to the Moodle learning platform as study material, lessons or a wiki can also be created in Moodle. These offer the advantage of allowing learning content to be presented in a multimedia format, making them particularly well suited for implementing online learning units for self-study.

Learning content is created in the form of individual online text pages, where images, graphics, and videos can be integrated.

The Moodle “Lesson” activity also offers the option of inserting quiz questions between the content.

Possible Uses

Online learning units provide a solid foundation for delivering content in flipped classroom scenarios.

Lessons:

  • Best suited for learning content that should be conveyed in a linear structure
  • Ideal for foundational knowledge that changes little over time or for recurring content
  • Depending on how students answer embedded quiz questions, they can be directed to different content pages, enabling tailored learning paths based on prior knowledge
  • Alternative tool: LernBar

Wiki:

  • Best suited for learning content that should be explored in a non-linear, interconnected way, where cross-references and linking are important
  • Ideal for dynamic content that requires rapid updates, versioning, and reorganisation
  • A combined approach is possible by selectively enabling or disabling editing on individual pages. Some content is prepared and presented by the teacher, while other content is created collaboratively by students as part of an assignment – see Wiki for collaborative content creation
