What is a reference copy?

A reference copy is, unlike a 1:1 copy, merely a 'shell' that refers to an original video. However, the reference copy is free of viewer metadata from the original video (e.g., discussion questions/answers, public/private notes, quiz results, access data).

If you want to copy a video from one folder to another in Panopto, a reference copy is automatically created instead of a 1:1 copy. This also applies to entire folders that are copied (all videos contained within them are then created as reference copies). This saves storage space and ensures that changes to the original video do not require additional updates to the copies.

For detailed information about reference copies, see the following (English) support article Learn About Video Reference Copies (opens in new tab).

If you want to reuse videos from Moodle courses of previous semesters in current semester Moodle courses, we recommend performing a course import in Moodle. Reference copies of the videos are automatically created during this process.

See FAQ: How can I use videos from a past semester in a current Moodle course?

Tip for selecting all videos in a folder at once:

First, select one video. Then, above the videos (to the left of the function buttons like ''Share'', etc.), the checkbox for selecting all will appear – see the following screenshot.
