Activity StudentQuiz

The StudentQuiz allows the creation of an interactive quiz for course participants. With this activity, students can, for example, prepare for exams and assess their own skills. The question bank for the course can also be quickly and easily expanded. Instructors can enhance the course's question bank with the help of students while also gaining an overview of the students' current knowledge level.

Create Activity

Switch to the course editing mode by selecting the “Edit mode” toggle. Then click on “Add an activity or resource” and choose the activity “StudentQuiz”.

Settings
Settings

Under the “Ranking Settings” section, you can configure the activity. The following settings are available:

  • Make students anonymous: Course participants can take the quiz anonymously.
  • Published question factor/ Approved question factor or Latest correct answer factor/ Latest wrong answer factor: Points can be awarded for publishing/confirming questions as well as for answering questions.
  • Rating factor: Questions can be rated using stars. The rating factor determines how many points the author of the question receives per star.
  • Default roles to exclude from rankings: This setting allows you to exclude specific roles from the ranking.

The grading is intended as a motivation incentive.

Restrict Question Types

To allow participants to ask more targeted questions or avoid question types that you consider unnecessary, you have the option to restrict question types. Under the “Question Settings” section, you can specify which question formats can be used.

To provide your course participants with questions, click on the StudentQuiz activity in the course and then select “Create New Question.” You will then have the option to choose from various question types. For more detailed information about the different question types, you can find further explanations at the Moodle Docs.

Example

This is how the StudentQuiz might look from a student’s perspective (see screenshot of provided questions). In the main view, there is an overview of all the created questions as well as a progress block and a ranking block, which can be expanded from the right-hand block panel.

By clicking on “Start Quiz”, the quiz will begin with all available questions. Alternatively, specific questions can be selected for a personalized quiz.

Rank and Progress
Rank and Progress

Quiz Progress

In the “My Progress” block, students can see their personal progress in answering the questions: available and unanswered questions, correct and incorrect answers.

Quiz Ranking

In the “Ranking” block, a leaderboard is displayed for the students, which includes correctly answered questions, depending on the factor settings. This is intended to further motivate students.

The default settings for the activity are set to anonymization. Students do not see the names of the authors of the questions or the points of their peers, only their own accumulated points. However, this anonymization can be removed in the advanced settings.

Rating Questions
Rating Questions

All quiz participants must give a rating of up to five stars after answering a question. Additionally, a comment can be left for the question. The average rating, as well as the comment, will be displayed on the main view page of the activity.

Difficulty and Rating
Difficulty and Rating

The difficulty of the question is determined by the percentage of incorrect answers. For example, if a question is answered correctly by all students, it will have a difficulty rating of zero. The blue bar in the background represents the average difficulty/rating by the community, meaning the entire course, while the yellow lightning bolts and stars indicate your personal difficulty/rating.
