Question Type “Drag and Drop onto Text”
Moodle offers various question types.
In the following, we would like to briefly introduce the “Drag & Drop onto Text” question type and explain it with a small example. With this question type, you can create cloze (fill-in-the-blank) texts, and students can fill in the blanks by dragging and dropping the provided answer options.
Create a question
To create a new question, you can find your “Question Bank” in your course by selecting the “More” tab in the top navigation bar. Within the “Question Bank”, you can edit your question bank and click on “Create a new question…” to add new questions. Now, you can choose the respective question type from the menu. We will select “Drag-and-drop onto Text”. When creating the question, some important settings need to be configured:
First, you can select the “Category” of the question, which allows you to assign this question to one of your courses or organize it by course.
The “Question Name” must be provided and should be descriptive so that you can easily find your question later in the overview.
In the “Question Text” section, you can create your cloze (fill-in-the-blank) text. The blanks should be indicated using double square brackets with the number of the choice inside (e.g., [[1]]).
Create answers
Under the “Choices” section, you can fill the corresponding gap in the text with a text answer. Additionally, you have several other configuration options under this section:
1. “Shuffle”: This option makes your answer choices appear randomly in the students' selection instead of in a fixed order.
2. “Group”: Here, you can create groups to categorize answer choices. An example would be a cloze text in different languages, where you create a group for each language, and the answer choices from different groups will appear in different colors.
3. “Unlimited”: By default, each answer choice can only be assigned to one gap. However, if a word needs to be used in multiple gaps, you don't need to number it differently. A simple click on “Unlimited” allows you to use the same choice multiple times in the text.
