Exporting and importing grades

Grades can be exported and imported in various formats. This article explains the export/import function.

Exporting grades

To export grades from the course, call up the grades via the “Grades” menu and select the drop-down “Grader report”. The lowest option in the drop-down is “Export”:

Grades -> Export (in the “Grader report” drop-down menu)

First select the file format in which the grades are to be saved. This selection must be made before the export, as otherwise the export will be carried out as an OpenDocument file by default. The XML-format (“XML file”) is recommended for reuse within Moodle.

Grade items to be included

Under “Grade items to be included”, you will see all possible grades that have been given for the activities in the course. Select all grades that you would like to have exported.

At the end of the list you will find the option “Select all/none” to either deselect all or select all. All grades are selected by default.

Export format options

You will find the following setting options under “Format options for export”:

  • Include feedback in export: If feedback has been submitted in the reviews, you can check this box so that the feedback is also exported.
  • Exclude suspended users: Is selected by default. Blocked users are participants whose enrollment is inactive and blocked. These grades are therefore not exported.

Now finish the process by clicking on “Download”. This will import your grades into the category you have selected with the settings you have made.

When importing CSV files or spreadsheets, you must adapt the settings to your file. This means that the encoding and separators are particularly relevant.

When importing from an XML file, there is the special feature that instead of uploading the file you can specify a link that leads to the XML file.
