Completion tracking (Teachers' view)

With the completion tracking function, activities and materials in a Moodle course can be marked as completed.

Activated completion tracking offers students and teachers added organisational value and can make it easier for both sides to meet teaching objectives. Students have the opportunity to actively mark their progress in working through the course material. Teachers get a better overview of students' learning progress within a course. You can find out what completion tracking looks like from the student's viewpoint in this FAQ article.

Enabling completion tracking in the course room

Completion tracking is not enabled by default. To be able to use it, it must first be enabled in the Moodle course settings (see screenshot “Enable completion tracking in the course room”).

Configuring activity completion

Once completion tracking has been switched on in the course room, completion tracking can be configured for the individual activities.

To do this, switch to edit mode in the top right corner and click on the three dots on the right side of the corresponding activity to edit the activity settings by clicking on “Edit settings”.

The following options are available in the activity completion area:

  • Do not indicate activity completion: In this mode, completion tracking is disabled for this element.
  • Students can manually mark the activity as completed: Course participants can independently mark this element as completed.

Note: Elements that existed in the course room before completion tracking was enabled are set to “Do not indicate activity completion” mode. All elements that are newly created after the activation of completion tracking are automatically set to “Students can manually mark the activity as completed” mode.

Conditional activity completion

Show activity as complete when conditions are met: This option offers you a selection of subordinate completion criteria, whereby at least one criterion must be fulfilled for the activity to be considered completed. (Depending on the activity for which you want to define completion tracking, the available completion criteria may be different).

Example choice of completion criteria (see screenshot “Conditional activity completion from student's perspective”):

  • Student must view this activity to complete it.
  • Student must have submitted a solution to complete the activity.
  • Student must receive a grade to complete this activity.

Viewing activity reports

From this overview, teachers can see which course units have already been completed by students.

You can access the completion overview of all students via the reports in the navigation bar above. You can now click on Activity Completion in the new menu.

You can use the Dropdowns to customise the overview of activity completions according to your requirements. For example, you can filter by specific activity types or sections and also choose between “Alphabetical” and “Order in course” for the order. In the table below, you have an overview of each student including the person's current progress (see screenshot “Completion overview”).

Note: The generated completion overview can also be exported in csv format.
