Groupings in Moodle

You can use grouping to bundle several groups together. It is used to make content visible only to certain groups.

Groups must exist in the course in order to be able to use groupings. You can create groups under “Participants” -> “Groups” in the drop-down menu -> “Create groups”.

Once you have created groups, they can be combined into groupings. To do this, select “Groupings” from the drop-down menu on the participants page. In the following window, select “Create grouping”. You can name the grouping here; the other two entries are optional.

After saving, you will see your overview page again.

Click on the button marked red in the screenshot (group icon) to add groups to the grouping. In the next step, you can select the groups that you want to add/delete from the grouping.

You will then see the grouping you have created and the groups in it on your overview page.

There are two ways to set groupings.

Variant 1: In activities, such as a forum, in the “Common module settings” area (can only be used in combination with a group mode – see FAQ “Using groups” ).

Variant 2: In activities and materials, such as files or links, in the “Restrict access” area (can be set independently of a group mode – see FAQ “Using groups” ).

Variant 1: Grouping via “Commen module settings” (only in activities)

If you are using a group mode (Separate or Visible groups), you can select the grouping under “Common module settings” when creating or editing an activity. This means that this activity is only displayed for the grouping that was entered.

Variant 2: Grouping via “Restrict access”

The variant that always works for setting groupings is via “Restrict access”; this is also possible for materials. When creating or editing under “Restrict access”, click on the “Add restriction” button.

The “Add restriction” selection window now opens (see screenshot). There, click the “Grouping” button, which will open a corresponding drop-down menu. Select the grouping that should see the content and save.

Restrictions can also be combined; conditions can be used to specify whether the restriction must or must not be fulfilled.
