Independent Group Formation for Students via activity “Group Self-selection”
Group self-selection in Moodle offers students a flexible way to independently organize themselves into groups and collaborate. They can create their own groups or join existing ones based on their preferences. This feature is particularly beneficial for students who wish to plan their group work autonomously and independently.
Adding and Configuring Group Self-Selection in a Course
To enable group self-selection for students, switch your course into editing mode by using the slider in the top-right corner. Then, select “Add an activity or resource” and choose the “Group Self-Selection” activity.
Give the activity an appropriate name and adjust the basic settings in the “General” section. For example, if you want to prevent groups from being formed with too few or too many members, you can set limits here.
In the settings, you will also find various other options, including the possibility of assigning a supervisor to a group, as well as configuring the permissions for students in relation to group selection.
If students forget the group password, it is recommended to enable the setting that allows participants to create their own groups, combined with the option to automatically delete empty groups. This way, students can independently create a new group and assign a new password.
How Does Group Self-Selection Work for Students?
In Moodle, students now have the option to create their own groups or join existing ones. They can set the group name, add a description, and choose a password for the group. The password ensures that only the desired members can join the group. This offers the advantage that even groups with fewer members can be formed – entirely according to the individual needs of the students.
